Where's The Beef?

Back in the 80's the hamburger chain Wendy's , ran a commercial that became a huge hit . Basically it had to do with who had the real big "beef"  hamburger , and was aimed at its competitors . It scored huge and if the term viral existed back in the day , that would have been the right word.

It was more or less show me and I will believe what you say. If you say we have a bigger burger or more beef , than prove it. Show me the proof.

We are a people who want to see the proof . The old saying seeing is believing . How often have you heard this saying when it comes to God . If  God would just show me a miracle or get me out of this ,I will believe. They will cry  out in time of need , oh Jesus please if you will help me , heal me etc.. I will follow you or believe in you . In other words , show me the beef!

But in reality this is not true . Even if one is delivered  or showed mercy , we want the benefits without the worship or devotion . Time and time again God showed His power and mercy to a stiff necked people , and over and over again they still turned away but a few.

In Jesus ministry the crowds thronged out to see Him , but when the going got tough and the masses where not getting their felt needs met anymore , they bailed . Even when he performed a miracle , it didn't make people  jump on the Jesus train.

In Luke 17:11-19 , 10 lepers are crying out as Jesus passes by. No doubt by this time Jesus healing abilities have been circulating for  a while , so they cry out in a loud voice , Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. Lepers of course were considered unclean and it was a very painful disease. Leaving one an outcast . Jesus , has compassion on them , tells them to go show themselves to the temple Priest , and when they do , they are all healed.  So what happens , they all come running back to Jesus and fall to their knees in thanksgiving and worship. Right? Only one returns , a Samaritan at that , who were considered irreligious to the Jews.

One out of ten. So they saw firsthand the healing power of Jesus , but 9 did not return to give Him thanks . You would think that they all would have come running back , for being healed of leprosy meant entrance back into society , free from pain and being unclean for the rest of your life. No seeing  doesn't mean one will believe. The 9 are much like most of us . We want the benefits of there being a God , to cry out when things are bad . Others will say stuff like , if so and so would see a miracle they would know there is a God . That simply is not true. For in reality we want no part of God .We don't want Jesus .

So why did the Samaritan return with a heart of worship and thankfulness ? The healing was not just physical it appears to have been spiritual as well. When Jesus tells the Samaritan that his faith has made him well ,it indicates a heart that has been changed as well. That is the bigger miracle.

It wasn't that he was healed he came running back . His heart that was dead in sin , was opened to see Jesus for who He is. The healer of souls.

We need a miracle to believe but its not seeing , its inward . We have so much evidence for God that when someone uses the argument they would believe and follow if they saw clearly is a fallacy . In truth they are without excuse. From creation ,to the word of God its right in front of them ,of us . But we hate God . So we use that excuse to run.

So if someone ever says , show me the beef , instead of going toe to toe with evidence , even though that can be useful at times , share the gospel of Christ. Remember they can't see God because they are dead men walking. Share the light of Jesus and pray the Holy Spirit we make them see .

A Christmas Carol - Patrick Stewart

Every year we would watch 3 versions of the Christmas Carol ,that number is now 4 with the Jim Carrey animated version having just been released on DVD. Over all I would have to say that the Alastair Sim version , done in1951 ,is the best due to his stellar performance of the old miser .The transformation scene is both funny and emotional at the same time.

Having said that , each version has scenes that are truly impacting for me. The scene above , featuring Patrick Stewart as Scrooge , is one such scene. Awakening Christmas day , and having been re-born if you will , he makes merry on the streets on London but as he is walking, he hears a Church singing and enters in . Timidly at first , but then joining in with joyful singing, proclaiming the reason for Christmas. What better place for a repented sinner to be on Christmas day .Then singing to the one who brings a change of heart. A person who truly knows how sinful they were and are , should be full of joy knowing how much they have been forgiven . But not just forgiven , but a new creation.

In this scene we see that change in Scrooge . From a Buh Humbug to singing praises of the Son of God . Awesome!

The Heart is the Matter

"Feel for others- in your pocket" Charles Haddon Spurgeon

Apparently over the last 2 years charitable giving is down . Significantly among the wealthy to the tune of 30%. That is huge and telling. Giving comes from a heart that is thankful and has a treasure other than this life and its earthly comforts.

If this life is all we  hope in we will covet and like Scrooge , cling and grasp to earthly things. If its God we take our delight in and comprehend the gift given to us freely in Christ , when the Father gave the Son , our soul should be moved towards generosity.

As Christmas draws close , the sense of need or lack of basic essentials seems be more acutely felt. Part of it because of the expectations that have been forced  on us by consumerism and materialism . But the fact is there is a real need out there in the world . Perhaps we want too much , but if all we have is from God , then should we not desire to give out of a thankful heart and thereby , store up treasures in heaven.

Giving is out our of the heart . So when you walk by the Salvation Army give, buy a little extra when you shop and give to the foodbank. Ponder the amazing gift of salvation , freely given .

So what is your heart telling about you . May your prayer be like mine , Lord may you be my treasure that I may be free to give what You have given me. Amen.

Third Day - Jesus, Light of The World - Christmas Offerings

[12] Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
(John 8:12 ESV)

As this Christmas season draws closer ,may the light of Jesus shine in your life so that others see His light shine. May the focus be on Him who was born to die for our sins and rose again that we may be justified .

Hands Off The Prince

This has to be one of the saddest things that I read for a long time and tells much about the state of affairs in the Church of England. A Bishop has been suspended , for what you rightly ask? Was it because he crossed the line and denied a cardinal Christian teaching , nope . He had the audacity  to make light of Prince Williams impending marriage. The basic comment suggested that this union would be doomed. He doubted it would last.

Was it wise to publicly make a statement like this , no. He probably doesn't know them well enough to make such a statement . But the fact he was asked to withdraw from public ministry over this statement frankly , makes me a bit sick.

Over numerous years within this denomination you have had bishops question the deity of Christ , the resurrection , the veracity of the Bible ,denial of the virgin birth and  a openly gay minister in a relationship. Now here is the rub. Throw a little jab at Prince William and the royal family and you are asked to be quiet and step down. But its open season on the King of Kings . The one all of these heretics will answer to .

How a denomination defends the truth from within is a clear indicator of its doctrinal health . To openly allow clergy deny doctrines that are the cornerstones of the faith is unthinkable.

A pastor needs to be solid in the word and doctrine , if he is not , he is not fit to be a shepherd of God's flock .

[9] He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.
(Titus 1:9 ESV)

Where is the rebuke from within to those have denied the faith . The silence is telling I think. If the body is diseased , one needs to take either medicine , have treatment or change ones life style in order for the body to heal. If those who pastor a church are denying the faith and teaching heresy ,they need to be rebuked publicly , and if they will not repent , amputation form body is  a must . They have disqualified themselves to lead the flock that Christ laid down Hid life for.

Sad you can kick the King but its hands off the prince !

Tim Hawkins - Holding Hands

This is so true and funny . Tim Hawkins is  funny and clean , what a novelty. Humor, good humor is indeed a gift from God.

Third Day - Trust In Jesus

This song really preached to me today . Some days it so easy to slip into despair and  lose sight of the hope we have in Jesus. When we stumble or fail to live up to God's law , we need to hear the gospel . Its what helps us grow in grace .

What I love about this song is its all about Jesus. When we stand in judgement we will not be able to boast about anything . It is all the work of Christ on our behalf . As the old hymn Rock of Ages brings this point home as well with these words .
  1. Nothing in my hand I bring,
    Simply to Thy cross I cling;
    Naked, come to Thee for dress;
    Helpless, look to Thee for grace;
    Foul, I to the fountain fly;
Wash me, Savior, or I die.
  2. May we trust in Jesus to secure our salvation on the day of judgement to come.

Its Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas

As of tomorrow we are only 32 days away from Christmas. This weekend we will begin our own advent meditations. Which consist of scripture reading , a brief devotion and the lighting of candle. Then we will watch a Christmas themed DVDs .It could be a movie or TV special.

I truly love this time of year.Even when I worked in retail , I never stopped enjoying the carols, getting a tree , decorating the house , having family over for supper . It was a challenge at times to work in an industry that depends on sales at that time of year to thrive. For the most part ,people were decent but the ones that were bad , well they were something to behold. They didn't rob me of my love for the season but it did leave me a bit stressed . Perhaps it was to a degree what I was selling but to hear people grumble and be nasty takes its toll.

Plus it is sweet to once again attend a Church and worship at this time of year. Having been away in a no mans land for over 10 years , I realize how much I missed . Being with God's people , lifting voices to proclaim the incarnation of the Lord has been a wonderful salve to my broken soul.

Christmas is a one of my favorite times of year. It is the starting point but not the conclusion. The cradle, the cross and the empty tomb all proclaim an amazing story . May we never lose that marvelous, wondrous , awestruck  understanding that God came as a baby when the Son ,the second person of the trinity clothed himself in flesh in a virgins womb .He entered into our sufferings that we might be our great high priest .One who understands us and loves us . Awesome .

Even If An Angel

There have been a couple of books that have made the claim that the individual died and went to heaven . Then upon being resuscitated , they recount the experience. What they report have a similar theme but what is lacking is the need for the gospel of Jesus Christ. It seems heaven is entered into without the need to repent of sin , trust in Jesus Christ and His life ,death and resurrection . The reports are a mixed up mess of new age spirituality and every thing under the sun .

So we can add another to these accounts. The story has broke and a book is forth coming ,about the experience of a 4 year boy at the time ,who went to heaven , talked to God , saw Jesus and dead relatives . Did this young boy experience something , no question  but as  Bible believing Christians , we need to put these accounts through the lens of scripture. In the account given ,there was no mention of the need to repent of sin and trust in Christ for salvation. Even the encounter with God was described as if God had a body but the word tells us He is spirit .Plus throughout the word , those who encounter God shudder in terror for He is holy and we are not.  There seemed to be no need for a Saviour , yes Jesus was mentioned but it seemed as an afterthought.

So what are we to make of this. Regardless if its coming from a young boy , I think what Paul has to say in Galatians should be heeded.

[8] But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.
(Galatians 1:8 ESV)

Paul's warns that no matter who brings another message of salvation , if it does not align with the truth that Jesus Christ ,the Son of God ,came in the flesh ,lived a sinless life ,was obedient to the God the Father , was put to death on the cross for His sheeps sins  and rose on the third day for our justification , then it is another gospel .A lie and is a counterfeit.

These stories feed the sinners soul , because there is no need for a Lord who bled and died . The God in these stories is not holy but more of a big fatherly figure .The cross is of no importance. The Bible is not the revelation of God to men . And all the while it leads so many to the wide road that leads to destruction. If the Devil wished to deceive , then why not pick the most innocent. If this young boy and his family aren't believers in the one true Lord , revealed in the holy Bible , then they need to repent of their delusion and come to to the light of the world , the Lord Jesus Christ.

Can You Accept It

One of the hardest things to live with or accept is the fact , forgiveness is not partial or a little bit , it is complete . That is the way it can feel at times however after we have been believers for a while. One of the practices we seem to forget about is confession and walking a life of repentance .

We can always recall the sweet first moment when God in His grace and mercy , called us out of the darkness , shined the light of the gospel of His Son , Jesus Christ, realized our sinfulness and through the blood shed on the cross , felt that sweet cleansing of our sin ,shame and guilt. Bowing before the cross and looking in wonder at the empty tomb , tasted the fruits of being made alive to God in Christ. We were a new creation in Christ. There was a wonder and elation of being forgiven. You didn't feel just a little forgiven , or a bit but completely washed whiter than snow.

However over time we forget that we need the gospel even as Christians . We soon realize we still sin , we still fail and although we are called to grow in holiness , the reality is we are not glorified yet.  If we do not practice the very practical application of preaching the gospel to ourselves every day , we can begin to feel the stain of sin not confessed cling to us. Then even if we confess and go before the Lord , it can sometimes be difficult to truly accept forgiveness.

But listen to what John tells us . If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
(1 John 1:9 ESV)

This promise is not to be taken lightly . We should thus make a practice of this command to live in daily confession .It will keep fellowship with God , create healthy relationships between fellow and help us live in  peace . A forgiven heart is a joyful heart . It is one that will grow in righteousness and love for God out of thankfulness .

Accept the truth that God will keep His promise and forgive you 100% . Walk in light of this promise and know we have a all sufficient  Saviour .

Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing, Jars of Clay

hat

The line in this hymn that is so true is that our hearts our prone to wonder .To turn away ,to pursue our own desires and pleasures, rather than looking to the Lord for our contentment, joy and satisfaction. May God keep us and may the Holy Spirit continue to reveal the beauty , the love and grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Its Not Funny

Recently in the news another person has admitted to faking that they had terminal cancer. This was the third case this year in Canada .The other 2 had fund raisers , community support and they played out this charade till they were caught . The same with this new case , he was exposed and came clean . He went on to explain why he  did what he did .

Now let me blunt as possible , I do not care what his motives were , nor do I care what the others reasons for faking they had cancer. No matter what or how they reason this deception out, what they did was morally reprehensible . The emotional  pain and fear they put so many people through is wrong. Plus it is a kick in the gut to all who are truly fighting this horrible disease.

Cancer has been a word in my life for a long time. From grandparents to my Mom and my wife .Having watched my Mom battle this horrid disease and die from it , holding my Grandmothers hand as she entered eternity , after bowel cancer came back and she couldn't rally from the surgery .Then caring for my wife who had to endure 17 hours of surgery ,reconstruction on her face , 6 weeks of radiation and chemo as well and thanks to the grace of God , she has rallied and is doing well. So when I read that people faked they had cancer , it gets my blood hot.

Cancer effects the whole family. It takes over and dominates ones whole life . From the appointments to the treatments . Then the emotional drain. The fear of losing someone you love . Its like your whole life is in some sort of twilight zone. Its hard to forget about it . Even on good days , it only takes one brief second for it to take over your thoughts .

So no matter what these individuals say try to justify why they did what they did , they are without excuse. They also owe every person who has battled this disease an apology . Then they should make them work for a year in a cancer ward . What they did was despicable to me . No excuses .

O Holy Night

Seeing that it is only 6 weeks till Christmas , this weekend we will begin to decorate the house for the season. I love Christmas music and have always enjoyed it. Even before I was a Christian , there was something about those carols . Soon we will start our advent countdown and reflect each Sunday leading to Christmas day as to why Jesus had to come .

As to songs , O Holy Night is one of my all time favs . It needs to be song epically and with passion and I think Josh Groban does an amazing job. Enjoy !

Uncertain Times

Locally our area has been hit hard by plant closures . Over the last 6 years we have seen in total 3 affected . Of those 3 , only one still maintains a skeleton staff. With the news today of another plant closing ,that makes 4. It is business , and these plants have seen the products they produce (poultry, beef, pork)shrink in profitability.

That makes a total of more than 1000 decent paying jobs gone.Do the math and add it up ,the effect on the local area is being felt. The jobs that have been created, by and large to replace these jobs, pay at least 4 to 5 dollars less , have less benefits and  in general ,are not 40 hours a week . That is the nature of the area I live in. For those who are doing well here , it is an amazing area to live but those who are struggling , it is tough.

So what should the Church be doing within the community when these type of things occur . Now first let me say , I do not think or believe in the social gospel having a prominent role over the true gospel of the cross , the preaching of Christ and the call to repent and believe to be saved .The very first task of the Church is to preach the gospel and call sinners to repentance . But we have been called to good works , that were prepared for us to do for God's glory.

For those without means to help in a financial way ,pray for those families . Lift them up that God will meet their needs . Not only physically but spiritually as  well. That if they do not confess that Jesus is lord , that salvation would come upon then and their house.

Now for those with means to help ,if they are in a position personally to do something act.don't just sit on your hands .

[17] As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. [18] They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, [19] thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.
(1 Timothy 6:17-19 ESV)

I love what Paul lays out here . First he tells those well off first not to put their faith in riches because things can happen very quickly and money can be gone . They are not to be haughty , a snob if you will who basically flaunt their success , by saying look at me . They should trust in God first , for He is the only certain thing in this life . Next they are to be rich in good works . One who has Christ as their treasure does not hold on money like a Scrooge . If they see a situation to help they do. A Christian who is tight with money is an oxymoron. In fact some commentary's point to how generous and willing to share and not hoard money ,is a barometer of ones salvation.

By seeing an situation to do good and responding , shows the heart. When you hear of people losing their jobs realize it can be a emotional roller coaster ,so pray for them and if you know them , look for tangible ways to support them . If they don't know Christ , ask God to open a door to share Christ. If they need real help when they are waiting for EI or assistance , and you can ,do so.

I vow that if God ever blesses me with money , I will not hoard it but will share it to help others in need . We need to see riches ,jobs ,family, friends as things that are uncertain ,We cannot put our trust or hope in. But God is a rock , the same yesterday, today and forever. If He is our treasure , the money will be easy to part with . For the bottom line , we came in naked in this world and we cannot take it with you.

So in these uncertain times may we as Christians , be awake to the hurts around us and be moved to love and show compassion. By doing so , showing the love of God who did not withhold His Son , so that we might not perish but have eternal life .

Follow Your Heart ....Not!!

One of the most popular sayings you hear over and over again to find your ultimate happiness is , just follow your heart. You hear it in popular music . In songs from Jewel to bands like Triumph , the message is the same . Your heart , your inner most desires are to be trusted . When in doubt let your heart be your guide . You can trust it , it will not lead you astray .Right!

So if I'm one is dissatisfied in any situation it must be the heart telling your inner most being what you are involved with is wrong . Not happy with your spouse and your heart is telling you  need to go , well that settles it. Or your in a situation where your feeling led to try something new , even if it goes against your moral code , perhaps your heart is telling you need to break free of those old codes . Those outdated codes are robbing you of your happiness. All that is holding you back is your not following your heart. Your suppressing yourself.

But the heart is not a neutral thing or even a good thing . Back up a second and think about your inner most thoughts and examine where they take you . Should you act on every thought or feeling you have . Can one trust the heart to lead you into a right path. I mean one of the lyrics of a song called Follow Your Heart goes like this , your gotta follow your heart , any other way will only lead to sorrow. I would argue , people who have followed their hearts have lead to more sorrow . Look around at the world , it is broken and hurting. Why ? The heart is sick ,evil and dead in sin .

[9] The heart is deceitful above all things,
and desperately sick;
who can understand it?
 (Jeremiah 17:9 ESV)

This is the true condition of a mans heart. It is a pool of deceit , it is corrupt , defiled and full of depraved thoughts. Our inner soul is a cesspool of depravity . It is dead to God and alive to sin. Our "feelings" should never be totally trusted .

[19] For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.
(Matthew 15:19 ESV)  These words of Jesus cut right to the heart of the matter. Our inner beings reveal our real state. Our hearts , our inner will , is not neutral , it as a malevolent thing. Hatching sin upon sin. Look around , watch a few TV programs or movies. Read the paper , you know something is wrong with us . Its not our environment that makes us do wrong or sin , we sin because it is who we are . From birth we are slaves to sin . Under the wrath of God , condemned by our straying hearts.

So what is the hope ? The hope is not to follow our hearts but to repent of that sin of self idolatry , and turn to follow Jesus Christ . To acknowledge your sin , admit the evil within your heart and trust in the blood , shed on the cross for your sin to cleanse you . Not only cleanse you , but God will make you alive to Him .

[26] And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. [27] And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.
(Ezekiel 36:26-27 ESV)

Read those words carefully . A new heart ,one alive to God , one that loves His law and commandments. The Holy Spirit comes and indwells , residing in us . Awakening us to sin , the goodness of Gods word , the love of Christ and a hunger for righteousness.

Follow your heart at your own peril unless it has been transformed by the gospel of Christ. Then find a good church, sit under the preaching of the word . Part take of the Lord's supper , read the word and pray with the intent for the Lord to search your heart . If you want to follow your heart to follow someone who can be trusted , I will let these words have the last say .

[24] Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
(Matthew 16:24 ESV)

Looking Back and Ahead

Today was my  47th birthday . I don't know if its the Irish and German in me , but my confession for today is , I was in a bit of a mood . I was really restless for some reason.

As I normally do , I spend some part of the day in reflection. Thinking back to past birthdays and just taking stock of ones life . My heart is always a bit heavy because on ones birthday , one usually thinks of their Mom. For a son growing up , a Mom plays a huge part in ones life . My Mom died from cancer 18 years ago this past September 6th . Each birthday that I draw closer to the age she died (52) just leaves me a bit saddened. I realize that at 47 , 52 is still way too young. I miss her more intensely on my birthday than any other day of the year . She is the woman who held me when I was sick , taught me to play my first guitar chords , helped me learn to drive(a standard no less), loved me with a sacrificial and forgiving love that every son should experience. Plus she kicked my butt as well when I messed up.

I still recall just before she died , she told me that she was really happy for me that I had a good wife who would love me and take care of me . Plus her first grandson ,Jacob (who was only 2 at the time) , was a sweet boy and she loved him so much . She told me to take care of him and have more children because she knew I would make a great Dad.Which God blessed us with Jordan , one year later . So for me , my birthday is always spent a little in the past .

Then I switch to taking stock. Where I'm at and where I want to be . Going forward , Lord willing , I want to be a better husband,Dad, friend . I want to serve the Lord more ,love Him more .Serve my church and  see what God will do .

So I'm 47 . Only 3 years away from 50. Truly I'm a pilgrim on a path . I just pray from this point on , God will use me for His purpose and glory .

Never a Regret

Often comedians make whole careers out of making light or fun of their marriage or marriages . On TV shows being married is often ridiculed and looked upon as a curse. For men  its a ball and chain. For women it is putting up with a "child".

But marriage is a honorable ,divine decree. God is the one who instituted marriage. It is a good thing .

[22] He who finds a wife finds a good thing
and obtains favor from the LORD.
 (Proverbs 18:22 ESV)

Today is my 23rd wedding anniversary. The image I have of that day is my bride walking down that aisle in a vision of beauty. There was a moment that it seemed to be just her and me . It was truly a magical day .

As I look back on our years together , I realize how blessed I have been to have had her given to me by God. As Proverbs reads , truly I obtained favor from the Lord. She blessed me with 2 sons , Jacob and Jordan. She has stood beside me through think and thin. She has forgiven me much, encouraged me ,stood by me in failures and cheered for me in victories , been my best friend, lover, counselor and yes , she makes me smile. I enjoy waking up next to her still. I love spending time with her .

It has been 23 years with many ups and downs . Tears and laughter. But through it all she has made me a better man . So for all my wife as done for me , here is to you babe . Your the best .

Phil Wickham - Safe

Whatever life throws your way , the one promise , the one thing that can you can hang all your cares and hopes on , is this, Jesus will never leave nor forsake you. Even when death comes calling , it is a defeated foe , one that will be done away with forever when Christ comes again. For we are safe in His arms , for the moment that life ends , we are in the presence of God , with Christ. Life can be hard , it can be full of dark clouds but we have a Saviour that we can trust to find peace and hope.

[28] Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
(Matthew 11:28 ESV)

Time For the Bells to Ring

Well its that time of year that I begin to pull out all my Christmas music . I have my favorites , a mixture of old and new .Standards  like Bing Crosby,Charlie Browns Christmas,Perry Como,Andy Williams are always enjoyed. Plus some of more recent ones from Steven Curtis Chapman,Third Day,Bebo Norman,Mercy Me, Downhere . All are excellent and highly recommended . If you want to get into the Christmas spirit , they should do the trick.

This year looks to be a bit of a lean year in terms of new material that would have me interested . I generally don't care much for the generic secular scream fest. But I have been pleasantly surprised by the release of Phil Wickham's Songs for Christmas.

His style is similar to Coldplay with a touch of British pop/rock. Even though this is a Christmas album with many standard carols , the sound is an excellent fit. Although it is stripped down a bit and not so polished . His arrangements are breezy and light , fitting his vocal style . Even though all the carols in the album have been done numerous times before , the way he arranged them adds new life and a fresh feel. The acoustic driven Silent Night , with some layered electric guitar and keyboards is a perfect example. All the songs have such a real fresh feel . From O Holy Night to O Come All Ye Faithful , they are pleasant surprises. He breaths new life into them.

There are two original tunes called Christmas Time  and Evermore. Both are solid songs  . The melody in Christmas Time is so infectious you will be singing along before you realize. The lyrics herald the wonderful news of Jesus coming leaving His throne . It is anthem and will be one of my favorites for years to come.

The album ends with O Come All Ye Faithful and it is just piano, guitar and what sounds like a flute. During the song there is a interlude with a portion of Luke chapter 2 read ( the portion also read during Linus speech in Charlie Browns Christmas). It is a fitting end to a wonderful collection.

It is only available on his website . You can download it  in numerous formats.

This wonderful album gets my 9 candy canes out 10 .

Representing Something Bigger

Today I watched as my oldest son , who is the President of the Kingstec Campus Student Association , lay a wreath in Remembrance day ceremonies in Kentville , NS. He was there to pay respects on behalf of the whole student body and all other members of the student council towards the soldiers who have served for our country in all wars. Both the past and present. He conducted himself well.

But what would have happened if he had have showed up intoxicated , acted obnoxious and was very flippant about the whole ceremony . Well for starters he probably would have been removed at the very least. But the bigger damage that would have resulted , would be shame and dishonor towards the office he holds as President of the school . The school would have been poorly represented . My son was an ambassador for his school. He represented the school as a whole .

The definition for an ambassador is "an authorized representative or messenger "(Webster Dictionary). We of course are aware of a political ambassador . But there is a bigger call for all who call themselves Christians.

Listen to Paul , [20] Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us.....
(2 Corinthians 5:20 ESV)

If we confess Christ we have been  declared representatives of God . We are to stand for our king. We have been appointed to this task . It is not just for Pastors or those that we see in positions of authority . All believers are called to this task. It is not just in the hands of the elite , for there is no elite in the kingdom of God . Yes we have been given elders and teachers , and we thank God for them , but we are all a people called out to be a unique race.

[9] But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
(1 Peter 2:9 ESV)

We are to be a holy nation, ambassadors who will represent Christ in this fallen broken world. Just as my son represented his school well, we need to do the same. We being representatives , bring a message of hope, of forgiveness from sin and reconciliation to God . All our life needs to mirror this truth. No matter where we may find ourselves. From play to work , may we be mindful of who we stand for.

Will we fall at times and not be the ambassadors we need to be , but even in those times of weakness , may we point to the one who took those sins to the cross as well. Even in our brokenness we can show its not our works or even our obedience that saves , but it is the righteousnesses of Christ. In general , as we grow in our walk , we should reflect the nature of Christ more and our obedience will flow from our love for what Jesus did for us. We may will never be perfect till heaven but may people see more of Christ in us , as we age.

We serve a great king , may we lay down our lives and represent Him well.

Remember The Fallen

In Canada on November 11th we pause to recall all the military men and women that have fought and for some ,have paid the ultimate price. The freedoms and liberty we have in our western culture can be attributed to those brave souls who have served in the military and defended our countries ideals .

I cannot say that within my immediate family there are any military tales to tell. I did have some uncles who served in WW11 but they would rarely speak of their war time service. However that did not stop me from reading of the history of the major wars in the last century. Plus I have always watched the documentaries concerning the major conflicts . To watch  the horrors they faced and sacrifices made, so that I may have the freedoms that are enjoyed by all of us in Canada, truly makes one thankful for what they have done and still do.

Currently we have military still involved in the war against terror in Afghanistan . So far 152 souls have been lost in this war . So as we pause at 11:00 am tomorrow , may we think about those still serving and risking their lives that we might have the liberty to be free.Free to vote, free to speak our minds, free to worship . May we  pray for them and their families .

In Flanders Fields  by John McCrae (1872-1918)

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
         In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
         In Flanders fields.

Whats Knotts to Love

I vaguely recall this movie with Tim Conway and Don Knotts. But what I can recall it was a funny clean film. No swearing, no gross sexual humor , no nudity . Just goofy , slap stick type humor from the funny men who starred.

I use to laugh at my Grandfather at times growing up , when he would lament the days gone by. However as I age , I know get it. Think how far we have come to what is allowed on TV,music, movies to what I grew up with. Granted you had foul mouthed comedians like Carlin,Bruce,Pryor and such but I did't find them funny. I thought they sounded stupid and gross.

I must look around for this movie . Hopefully I can find it , sit down and enjoy it . Knowing one day , Lord willing , I could watch with my grand children and not blink an eye .

Don't Bother Praying !

We can be so pious in our private prayers . We make request for all sorts of thing . From evangelism to the poor, our church , healing , comfort for others . They sound so great leaving our lips and ascending to the throne of grace . After we are done, we feel so justified , knowing we have done well . I have done it and most do it all the time .

For example we pray for souls to be saved but following our passionate plea , fail to find ways to open doors with family and people we know. We pray for God to be with those in pain , but do we reach out in tangible ways.

But the one area that is probably the worst , is when it comes to dealing the poor amongst us within our Church . If someone has no job or lost their job we pray for them , in a way wiping our hands of it with God. God will deal with it.We have have discharged our duty , right? Really !

[15] If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, [16] and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that?
(James 2:15-16 ESV)

"In itself the phrase Go in peace, be warmed and filled is a pious wish and prayer for the welfare of the poor, but in reality it is a cop-out, masking a refusal to help the person in need." ESV Study Notes.

To fail to respond if we know a need is present , if one has  the means to do so , James states that type of faith is useless. If true faith has taken root in ones heart , compassion  , love and charity should flow. To be overwhelmed with the love of Christ should result in a heart prepared for good works.

So the next time you pray , right things down in a journal and pray through them . To visually see them before will hold you accountable concerning what your praying about. Pray with intent towards action. Don't pray for the poor unless you give . Stop praying till you really mean it .

Hope , In What ?

In the movie The Road , the central thing that keeps the father from giving up is hope. The hope that he would find some way to save his son's life. He called it the fire that burns inside . He told his son not to give up the fire . Its what makes one a "good" guy. Although the book and movie has a very grim world surrounding the father and son , its that fire or hope that gives them the will to fight to continue on.

But many other characters in the movie gave up hope. They either commented suicide or fell into the utter evil and depravity. Turning to killing , raping and cannibalism to survive.

As a Christian , hope should be one of the anchors of our soul. The world may not be as bleak as the Road , but as we read the news or watch the CNN , we can be bombarded with evil, catastrophes . Even within our own corner of the world , who doesn't know someone who is not suffering be it with disease or financial hardship. Real pain.Real brokenness.

So what is our hope? Our hope is in knowing that no matter what, there is a God who is in control . There are no random atoms is the universe. Our hope in God is not only that He is there but He is not silent. He has spoken in His word revealing who He is , who we are . Our hope is in that not only has God spoken but He came in flesh to redeem sinners. Our hope is in the son , Jesus Christ , who came to lay down His life a ransom for many. Our hope is in the cross of Christ , through we have forgiveness of sins. our hope is in the risen,  Lord Jesus , through it we have eternal life , for death has been defeated. Our hope is in the coming day when all things will be made new as , when Jesus comes again .

The list could go on , but we have a real hope , not a imaginary one . May we live like we do . The world puts up illusion after illusion , but we have a concrete hope , a rock that cannot be shaken . It should fire us up to share that hope , that good news and let the world know , real hope can be found in the person of Jesus Christ .

Bebo Norman - I Hope You See Jesus

Bebo Norman is fast becoming one of my favorite singer/songwriters. This song taken off his new album Ocean , is a beautiful reminder that we are not the gospel. Our testimony is not the gospel. Yes our lives must reflect Jesus Christ , and therefore point people to Christ but even our best days , we need the cross, the blood, the lamb who took our place. The gospel is something outside ourselves , that Jesus took our sin , nailed on the cross and paid our guilt and shame . He hung in our place , took that bitter cup from the Father that we might stand before a holy God clothed in his righteousness. God the Father crushed the Son , so that He could satisfy the law , removing the wrath due us . The Father loved so he gave the Son . May the Holy Spirit awaken out hearts to this glorious truth as we prepare our hearts to worship on the Lord's day .

[20] Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God [21] For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
(2 Corinthians 5:20-:21 ESV)

Bytes and Paper

I just recently downloaded the Kindle application for PC's . I have been thinking about purchasing a hand held Kindle after reading a couple of reviews of the device. Now with the application download on my PC , I can mess around with it and truly find out if I want to purchase one.

So my first thoughts  , love the immediacy of the device. The download process is easy and simple . The click of a mouse and I had numerous books uploaded to my hard drive. There are many free books available but they are a bit slim on the theological spectrum. That being said , if you want the classics , works from Dickens,Bunyan,Milton etc.. Unlike ordering any of them for purchase and waiting , within less than a minute they are there to open and read.

Looking at the regular kindle books available ,the price is always cheaper than the actual physical copy. Sometimes over 50% , which is great if you want to build a library`quickly. Plus there is no shipping and handling charges . The selection as well is amazing in all genres . Very few books now are not available in the digital format upon release. Plus you have the convenience of not worrying about the book you are looking for being out of stock . If you have a connection , you are good to go.

The ultimate convenience of course you need not go out to a store and spend time browsing . You just type in the search engine and click. No travel,no crowds , no noisy mall crawlers .Of course this is the same if ordering a hard copy as well.

The reading process is easy and you can adjust the font , brightness, bookmark the page you left , write thoughts in a margin etc.. which is really an excellent group of tools . They help making the reading process enjoyable . So after playing with the program , there is no question that I will invest in a handheld Kindle in the future.Just like the MP3 revolution in music , the  Kindle along with its emerging competitors , is here to stay.

However I will leave you with this . Although I really think the Kindle will be a great tool and will be a device that will only grow in popularity , I still love the feel, smell and look a ink on paper . There is something more personal about a book . They become a part of you . Plus you cannot share your digital data to a friend but you can share one of your favorite books.

The cool factor though is if I want to take all of Edward's,Luther,Spurgeon,Sproul and Calvin's works with me to the beach or on vacation , I can , without breaking my back. Awesome.

Word Up Old Man

Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life.
 (Proverbs 16:31 ESV)

For everyone who is getting older and feeling the adverse effects , in this youth obsessed culture , this passage should offer all of us some peace. We cannot alter the fact we live a linear life. From the point of conception we begin to age. Growing up , probably every generation thought that the older generation was lame. But in God's eyes , those with age were to be respected and given honor. To disrespect your elders was punishable . How far we have come.

Even within the Church we marginalize the old. Separating them into their own little segment. for some reason we think that just because they are old , they don't recall the same struggles and thoughts younger people have. You also hear the line , well how could they understand what I'm going through. But the fact is struggles with sin and doubt were the same 2000 years ago as they are today.

They need to be heard and listened to. They know the pains of life , the grace of our Lord and the reality of the battle we are in with the flesh, the world and the devil. The more we segment the church in groups like youth, singles, married and not truly come together as one body , we miss out on so much .

so if you get up this morning and find a few more gray hairs or less hair ( or no hair ), then know that God has blessed you with long life , and many lessons . Find a way to share your trust in Jesus , that has carried you through many ups and downs. The aged have something to say , may God give us ears to hear and them a door to open .

I'm In A Hurry and Don't Know Why

The country band Alabama had a hit with the song I'm in a Hurry . Today I was reminded of this song as I was driving on the highway and watched traffic rushing to the point of being risky almost. So as I watched a car go whizzing by me and crowded another , I wondered why?

We scurry and race for what purpose. Most of the time its for no real reason . Its not a matter of life or death . If one was looking down from outer space and observed the scene unfolding , it would remind one of ants. But the difference would be at least the ants are working towards a common goal. But most human beings in the west seem to obsessed with money, pleasure and the accumulation of things.

The sad fact is we rarely get a chance to step back and pause. Back in the past , hard work was needed to sustain your family . As technology advanced , the idea people would have more leisure time but in general that really hasn't happened. With the advent of shift work , a fragmented workforce  with so many working 2 or 3 jobs because they cannot get a full time job , families do not spend as much time as a unit.Add in the factor much of the west has bought into the bigger is better myth, and the money trap ensnares so many people.

A Christian needs to resist this mindset. Its not that we should not work hard or well , but time for God,family and friends must be mixed into the balance. We need to slow down and realize that all of life is to be lived for God's glory . So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God(1 Corinthians 10:31) Even when we are on the road driving, standing in a line up , waiting for an appointment , all these things can be done for God's glory by showing patience and being pleasant when dealing with someone at the check out line or someone merging in traffic.

We never know who will be watching us . Perhaps one Sunday they will see you going to Church and connect that your behavior was different . The only thing that a believer should be urgent about is the sharing of the gospel. But rushing and driving ones self crazy for no real purpose is energy used uselessly .

A Good laugh is Good for the Soul

Sometimes one needs a good laugh . Most comedy today  is not fit to for anyone to listen to . So its been great to discover someone who is funny without the over top crudeness that makes up much of what is called comedy today.

God's word tells us that there is a time to laugh . So humor is a gift from God and is truly a great stress releaser. I can still recall laughing so hard it hurt when I watched the transformation scene in the Alistair Sim version of The Christmas Carol. So I hope this little ditty does the trick . Plus for the record , I do not think that I have uttered any of these faux pas . But I'm sure my lovely wife will let me know . After all I'm a man and a saved sinner . So I know I have put my foot firmly in mouth more than once .

Being Prepared To Die, Is A Licence To Live

Today marks the 3rd year of my wifes successful surgery to remove the cancer that had invaded a part of her jaw ,inner cheek and muscle inside her mouth . I spoke about this before , but I still recall that day vividly . The long wait of almost 17 hours till she was wheeled into the cancer wards ICU. Other than the time my youngest  suffered his first severe diabetic low and went into seizure , I can think of no other time I was in so much fear.Fear of losing my wife , fear of not seeing her again. Not talking to her , laughing with her , holding her .

But what was so amazing as well , was watching her demeanor before the operation. Even though she didn't want to die , she faced it with a peace that was powerful to me .The verse that was ever present in her mind was when Paul said ," For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain". (Philippians 1:21 ESV) Her confidence in Christ  gave her a courage to look death in the face and say , O death where is your sting , grave where is your victory. The faith that God had graced her with gave her hope, knowing her sins where covered by the blood of the perfect Lamb on the cross. She knew that if this was her time , the next face she would see would be Jesus. But God was gracious and she came through .

Today we had a recheck. The Doctor told us that at the third year mark , with her still being cancer free , she has crossed a mini milestone. That going forward , her chances of the cancer reoccurring has significantly dropped. To God we are truly thankful for His grace.

However each time we go to the cancer ward , you can see the fear of the uncertainty on so many faces . It does not matter how old one is either . We really control so little in this life really . One can never tell what is around the corner . In this world we are obsessed with staying young . Old people inject themselves with chemicals, have plastic surgery , work out taking supplements etc.. to try and maintain youth. There is nothing wrong trying to take care of yourself but much of what is being done I believe is powered by the fear or even denial of death.

As Christians we have a message that is good news . That breaks the tyranny of deaths hopelessness . Unlike the recent movie called Hereafter , which really offered no answers , we can. The truth is that in Jesus Christ , we can be ready to die and break the fear of the grave. In Jesus we are also given a licence to live to God. The simple message that death is the result of sin , we all die therefore we are all sinners  For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23 ESV)That Jesus came , the Son of God left His throne to die and take the wrath due us on the cross. That God the Father loved the world that He gave the Son , that whoever repents , turns from their sins and trust in Christ , has the gift of eternal life. The Holy Spirit takes up residence in our hearts and gives us a new heart . One that is alive to God , and walks with confidence .

The confidence my wife was given was not from any positive thinking guru , but from knowing her position before God. Forgiven and loved by a Saviour that broke the grip of sin and death , by rising from the dead. To be prepared to die , gives one freedom to live, love and give . May we share this hope .

[13] But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. [14] For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.
(1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 ESV)
